‘This is the house for me’

Moving house is a stressful time for most people, but having moved to Littleover, Jane and her two cats can now relax in her new surroundings

Jane’s new shared ownership home, on a brand new housing development in Littleover, Derbyshire overlooks a pond. “It’s really lovely first thing in the morning,” she explains. “There’s a lovely little family of ducks out there at the moment.”

A local girl who had moved away, Jane was keen to return to the Derby area, but was struggling to save a deposit. “I moved back in with my Dad for a bit.

“I originally wanted to buy outright, but what I could afford I didn’t want; the area wasn’t right and I wanted to be near family. Looking online, this house came up along with a couple of other shared ownership properties. I did a bit of research and found out that it meant part rent, part buy, and I thought, oh what a good idea!

“I completed the form on the East Midlands Help to Buy website to see if I’d be eligible and I got a ‘yes’ the next day.

“I rang the number on the advert; it put me through to NCHA and I made an appointment to view the house. As soon as I saw it, I thought, ‘Yeah, this is the house for me,’ so straight away I paid a £250 deposit to secure it.

“I was so desperate to get in, I got the keys on the Friday afternoon and I was waiting with the van full of my belongings."

For Jane, shared ownership feels like a better use of her money: “I didn’t like the thought of renting. It felt like a waste of money.

“It feels like home here already; the neighbours are brilliant. When one of my cats got out they couldn’t have helped more. They helped me search for her, put up posters, and were as happy as I was when we got her home.”

Shared ownership gives residents the option to buy more of the property when they are able to. “That was one of the other things that sold this house to me; one day I hope to increase my share to 100%.

“If I can get a house like this on my own, then anyone can!”
